Restored at Weybourne in the Carriage Shed. and officially launched on 19th
July 2006.
It was built at a cost of £922.00 for the Great Eastern Section
as 6843.
It was similar to many brake vans of the period, but was built
specifically to carry homing pigeons, in 40 baskets, to their
point of release. Hinged, slatted shelves fold down from the
walls to hold the baskets.
It would have carried other items when not transporting pigeons,
including fish carried in boxes of ice. (This is why the floor
was washable and had side drains.
It is fitted with dual braking (vacuum and Westinghouse (air)
brakes).
In 1947 it was re-numbered as 70246, in the new LNER series.
It was condemned in 1962 and was transferred to Departmental
stock and re-numbered as 040923.
It was bought from BR by Paul McOwan in 1969-70 for £150.00 plus
transport to North Walsham. Its journey to NNR at Sheringham was
completed by road.
In its early days on the NNR it ran in unlined maroon livery.
In the summer of 1979 it was restored to varnished teak.
During the late 1990's the BYP was set aside awaiting a full
overhaul. The whole coach needed stripping down to the
individual components to repair the ravages of time , rust and
water. The real work did not start until undercover space became
available in the new C&W Shed at Weybourne.
In 2001 the M&GNJRS bought the PYB for a nominal sum from Paul
McOwan and it was moved into the new shed restoration began.
