About the Society
The Society’s history goes back almost 50 years.
It was in October 1959 that the Midland & Great
Northern Joint Railway Preservation Society was formed, originally
with a view to preserving the North Walsham Town – Yarmouth Beach
section or the Themelthorpe – Melton section. Neither of these
schemes came to pass, and the Society then concentrated its effort
on the Sheringham – Weybourne – Holt line. In 1967, the Society
formed the North Norfolk Railway company, and celebrated the
re-opening of steam-hauled public services in July 1976. Today the
Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway Society is a registered
charity supporting the Poppy Line, and is the biggest shareholder in
North Norfolk Railway plc, the operating company. There are some
2,000 members, who are kept in touch via this website and the
quarterly colour journal Joint Line.
