 Sheringham Level Crossing

-

9th January - The snow and frost.

We were joined for the day by Robert Jones, who is keeping a photographic record for his University project.
Thanks go to Chrissie and Nessa for their excellent catering.  (words and photos Bob Wright 10/1/10)

This image (29th January) shows the new structure being formed to relieve the adjacent BT underground chamber, installed since the original rails were removed, from being affected by the weight of trains passing over the new line.  This structure is akin to a buried bridge, and contains a reinforced cage, and has now been installed.  (Photo Bob Wright).

21/2/10 At the end of the Big Weekend, all the rails are in place, tamped and the level crossing roadway beams in place on their foundations ready for the road surface each side to be built up by the highway contractors. Panels similar to those on the footway will infill the road surface between these beams.   The rail tops were about 100mm above the road level as it existed before the works, though presumably reflect the height of the original rail crossing.  All that remains for Oliver Cromwell to rumble across is for the Network Rail buffer to be removed and the last short length of rail to be installed, this will incorporate the "breather switch" in fact a long sliding tapered joint designed to absorb expansion in the Network Rail continuous welded rail the Cromer branch.  The track under the crossing is to modern standards.
