Brief Outline
A number of prototype single and two-car Railbuses (LEVs)
were built in the mid-1970's by BR Research in
co-operation with Leyland. LEV is sometimes taken as an
acronym for "Leyland Experimental Vehicle" and sometimes
for "Lightweight Experimental Vehicle". LEV1 (Leyland
Experimental Vehicle) was built as part of these
experiments.
LEV1 was consisted of a double-cabbed bus body mounted on
a BR two-axle underframe. Initially it was an unpowered
trailer car and then underfloor engine and mechanical
transmission were fitted. It had a 200hp motor. It
operated along routes in East Anglia including the East
Suffolk line. LEV1 also had a spell of trial running in
the USA.

The vertical dampers have been overhauled. Progress has
been made with cleaning the interior. Sourcing replacements continues-a
recent visit has been made to the British Bus Sales yard at Cobham to
recover seat fittings. |
