History

Brief Outline

The GWR 5600 Class is a class of 0-6-2T steam locos designed by C.B Collett and built between 1924 and 192and introduced into traffic in 1924. The last of the Class were built by Armstrong Whitworth between August and October 1928.
The Class was originally designed for work in South Wales, replacing the worn out locos that had been ‘inherited’, when the smaller railway companies were merged to form the GWR in 1923.
As well as 5643, 12 other locos from the class were taken to Dai Woodham's yard at Barry for scrapping. 4 were broken up but 8 survived into preservation.
 The nine preserved engines are numbers 5619, 5637, 5643, 5668, 6619, 6634, 6686, 6695 and 6697.
5643 is resident on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway and is owned by The Furness Railway Trust. 5643 was on the NNR in August/September 2007.
