Brief Outline
The GWR 5600
Class is a class of 0-6-2T steam locos designed by C.B Collett and
built between 1924 and 192and introduced into traffic in 1924. The
last of the Class were built by Armstrong Whitworth between August
and October 1928.
The Class was originally designed for work in South Wales, replacing
the worn out locos that had been ‘inherited’, when the smaller
railway companies were merged to form the GWR in 1923.
The GW Society bought 6697 from BR in 1966. 12 other locos from the
class were taken to Dai Woodham's yard at Barry for scrapping. 4
were broken up but 8 survived into preservation.
The nine
preserved engines are numbers 5619, 5637, 5643, 5668, 6619, 6634,
6686, 6695 and 6697.
6619 is resident on the
North York Moors Railway, and was on the NNR in
April 2007.
