Brief Outline

Designed by  R.A. Riddles, 92203 was  built at Swindon in January 1959 and was the the third class 9F class to be built.
The Class was Introduced in 1954 and was the last British Railways steam locomotive design. 251 were built at Swindon.
The wheel arrangement is 2-10-0 and the centre driving wheels are flangeless, to allow curves to be negotiated.
Designed for heavy freight, the 9Fs were the most powerful freight locomotives to run in the UK. When used for passenger work they were found to be capable of speeds of up to 80mph.
When withdrawn after a working life of less than 9 years, 92203 was working the heavy iron ore trains out of Liverpool Docks to Shotton Steelworks, and worked the last steam-hauled ore train in November 1967.
The locomotive was purchased direct from BR by the artist David Shepherd. He named her Black Prince, a name never carried by 92203 in service.
