History

Martello is is one of the oldest working steam engines in the country having been built by William Stroudley in 1875.
It was still operational until 1961 and was withdrawn in November 1963.
In 1964 it was bought by Billy Butlin. Cosmetically restored it ran at the Butlin's camp at Ayr. It left Ayr in 1971.
It was bought by the Bressingham Museum and was in steam until the late 1970's.
Martello was returned to steam in 2002. Supported by a grant from the Lottery Heritage Fund, the engineering department at Bressingham overhauled and renovated Martello. The engine was dismantled down to its frames and the boiler retubed.
