O.V.S.Bulleid, the Chief .Mechanical Engineer of
the Southern Railway from 1937 - 1949 designed the "Light Pacifics", based his
earlier streamlined ‘Merchant Navy' class of Pacific.
110 of these Bulleid 'mixed traffic' Light Pacifics were built, the first
entering service in 1945. It was officially withdrawn in 1965.
34081was ordered by the Southern Railway from Brighton works in 1947. It
entered service in September 1948, after the railways were nationalised.
