Brief Outline
This Class of engine was a Worsdell design for
the Great Eastern Railway, originally introduced in 1883, later modified by
Holden. Our, now unique, J15 engine was built at Stratford in 1912, as No. 564.
The engine carried several running numbers (LNER 7564 & BR 65462) before
withdrawal in 1962, having outlived many other, more modern, types of
locomotive.

Re-tubed in October. Also new
pre-fabricated concrete firebox arch has been inserted.
J15 visited the Gloucester/Warwick Railway from mid November and Barrow
Hill.
Planned maintenance to the axlebox
underkeep pads will take place before the main season. |
| February 2008 |
On 12th February the right hand crosshead fell apart. This was very
quickly repaired by borrowing a part from 69621 and after a few
adjustments was back in service the same day. On the following Thursday
the engine stopped again because of excessive priming, probably caused
by an overdoes of the new water treatment. |

The J15 is having some heavy maintenance over the winter.
A new elbow is being cast for the main steam pipe. At the last overhaul
a fabricated one was made to replace the lost cast original. This hasn’t
lasted well, a cast one will last as well as the original.
New ‘Armstrong Oilers’ lubrication pads will be fitted to the driving
axleboxes.
New piston rings are likely to be required.
The slidebars are to be re-aligned to ensure they are completely true.
This will help the piston glands stay steam tight, pictured right.
The fireman’s side injector has been extensively reamed out and
re-bushed. Previously this leaked water badly all around the top of the
water valve. The society is still searching for a spare. The
new NE pattern chimney will also be fitted this winter. |
