Brief Outline Key Facts History

Brief Outline

Many J94 Austerities were built for the Ministry of Supply and for local coal mines and coal boards. In 1946, 75 of these engines were purchased by the LNER for heavy shunting work. Many of them continued working well into the 1960's under British Railways' ownership. They were also used on slow speed suburban trains. The War Department ordered a further fourteen in 1952, one of which was 3809 built by Hunslet in 1953. 3809 has a Geilsel ejector fitted. It was later transferred to the NCB and worked in Michael Colliery, Fife. It was purchased by NNR plc in 1986
