History
19820-6-0 “Ring Haw” worked for over 30 years (all of its
working life before being acquired by NNR plc) hauling
iron ore trains at the Nassington Barrowden Mining
Company’s quarries near Peterborough.
The “Fitzwilliam” class “Ring Haw” was built by the
Hunslet Engine Company in 1940 and in company with sister
engine “Jack’s Green” it hauled iron ore from various
quarries to the sidings at Nassington. Both "Ring Haw" and
"Jack’s Green" were named after two small woods near the
quarries.
Apart from iron ore, limestone, silica sand and silica
clay were extracted from the workings.
The end of Nassington was precipitated by the drying up of
its traditional markets. Production dropped dramatically
and the quarry worked only three days a week. Production
finally ceased at the end of 1970. It was the last
privately owned iron stone quarry and the last to be steam
operated.
“Ring Haw” was bought by NNR plc in 1970 and travelled
much of the way to Sheringham under its own steam. It
first went to Peterborough (East), then to Peterborough
(North) before going to the British Sugar Corporation
factory on the Great Northern Main Line. Then it travelled
by low loader to Sheringham.
For many years it was a stalwart of the NNR and saw
service virtually every year up to its withdrawal for
overhaul. |
