DIESEL UPDATE
Tony Smith reports:
Class 25 D5207 – The loco is now out of traffic. The engine has
been weeping around various seals, and a ‘Top End’ overhaul has
started. The new steam heating boiler is ready to replace the
existing unit, and it planned that this work will be complete
before the Santa Special season.
Class 31 31162 – The loco is being painted, with the body
repairs having been completed. It is planned to operate the
loco, and it’s steam heating system for two weekends in
November.
Class 31 31207 –The loco has performed well, except for a couple
of minor issues. An earth fault has been identified as being
caused by the wiring to the number one air compressor, which has
deteriorated and is shorting out to body. This fault is not
causing a serious problem, and will be repaired once the work on
D5207 is complete.
Class 37 37032 – Work is still ongoing, with various electrical
machines being removed from the loco and thoroughly overhauled.
Class 47 47367 –The loco has seen occasional
use, with drivers being trained as the loco and staff roster
allows. Work continues on restoring the cabs.

NEWS OF THE COLMAN'S VAN RESTORATION
Progress at SOLD. Photos of the sides painted and sign
writing being undertaken. Since the van was originally given for
restoration by Colman's in the late 1960's there have been a
number of attempts at the restoration of the van. The current
restoration of the van is being undertaken by participants in
the Special Objectives for Local Disabled (SOLD) at Lowestoft
and is progressing very well. At SOLD a small but enthusiastic
team has been involved over the last two years. The project is
on schedule for a 2008 return to the Railway, its centenary
year.

The Guards brake is due for delivery early February, with
Carnforth personnel then coming for a week to put the set

sure the pas comm works and spend at least a day running
along the line at line speed checking everything thoroughly.

QUAD ART SET UPDATE
Ash Barrs (who is overseeing
the restoration of the Quads Art set on behalf of the
Society) visited Carnforth on
24th August, and was happy with the progress and
the quality of the work.
The 2 coaches in the workshops have had 3 coats of varnish
already and they were being rubbed down ready for the 4th
coat, The on site foreman is taking so much pride in this
project that he is coming back in the evenings and at
weekends to apply the varnish so that there is no dust
about.
One of the coaches has had the dummy steam heat pipes put
back in, the wiring is through the ceiling, the roof vents
are ready to go on and all the seats and seat back are
re-upholstered and ready for fitting. One of the pictures
below shows the ceiling fittings for the lights already to
be fitted.
On the other coach in the workshops they have fitted the
draw bar and are in the process of fitting the vacuum pipe
(see picture below).
One of the bogies has been completely over hauled and they
are half way through doing the next one.
When the coaches come back to Sheringham, Carnforth is
sending down an accommodation bogie as well so that they can
be carefully move around .
Ash feels that the photos do not do justice to how these
coaches are looking and he is sure that when the set arrives
back at Sheringham they will be something that the Society
should be really proud of.

31207 UPDATE
The Society's
31207 has been in the shed to repair the leak in the
fuel
system
header tank, and replace a roof arch. The fuel system includes a
header tank, which is part of the roof at the Sheringham end, on
the seaward side. There has been an
ugly stain running from the roof down over the radiators, which
came from this leak. The roof section was removed, and the tank
repaired. The roof is in several sections which can be removed.
Between each section is a gutter which also acts as a support.
On the join between the last roof section at the Holt end, and
the cab roof, the gutter had corroded away, which is not good
news, as this is immediately above the main electrical cubicle.
This has now been replaced with a new section. Both of these
jobs are typical problems on Class 31 locos.

M&GN BRAKE
VAN No. 12.
The
latest item in the JHCF fleet.
It was built 1881 by the Birmingham Railway
Carriage Works (BRCW) for the Lynn & Fakenham railway, which became the
Eastern Midlands Railway in 1883 and
then the M&GN in 1893.
It was used for the Breakdown
train based at Melton Constable as a riding van for the breakdown crew.
It had a tool box at one end and a veranda at the other.
It was withdrawn in 1945 and has been used as a garden shed
since. The toolbox and the veranda are now missing.
A ex-royal Navy under frame has been purchased and when this arrives
it will be converted to the brake van length. A new floor will
be added, the brake van body fitted and the replacement
veranda and tool box added.
