POPPY LINE’S HISTORIC TRAIN WINS MAJOR NATIONAL AWARD

The 84-years-old wooden-bodied "Quad-Arts" have won the North Norfolk Railway a major award from the Heritage Railway Association.

The train, rebuilt over four years with the help of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, is described by the National Railway Museum as “the most important piece of heritage rolling stock in the country”. a precursor to articulation used on Eurostar and other very high speed trains.
North Norfolk Railway director Clive Morris, who masterminded the restoration programme, said: “This is tremendous recognition for our volunteers and for the craftsman at our contractors, West Coast Railways in Cumbria, whose meticulous workmanship has brought a key piece of railway history vividly alive again.”

And spokesman Colin Borg added: “You don’t have to be a train buff to appreciate this wonderful piece of 1920s Jazz Age transport history. Sit in one of its spartan compartments, and you can easily imagine the hundreds of city clerks scrambling to board the 5.35pm home.”

NNR BEER FESTIVAL
The midsummer North Norfolk Railway Beer Festival at the Poppy Line’s Sheringham Station is now firmly established in the beer (and rail) enthusiasts’ calendar. This year’s Festival, the seventh, was better than ever if not a little overcrowded, but there were seats for all along the platform and later within the carriages thoughtfully parked alongside, after the last service.  The service behind the bar was hectic but prompt and always smiling, more than can be said for a lot of beer festivals.  The beer was terrific, lovely products correctly served.
The live entertainment was enjoyed by the crowds, not my personal cup of tea, but that's not the point, it suited most of the audience and added to the atmosphere.
The Bittern Line makes for a festival where drinking and driving can easily be kept separate, and the staff didn't seem to mind the last pint being consumed on their train.  Let's hope the tube alcohol ban doesn't ever extend to the national network generally.

Here are the new tool box doors ready for fitting on No12. Also being made at present is the tool box end wall. The floor frame is to be the next job, so that we end up with a kit of parts ready to assemble on the brake van chassis.
The body has been sheeted over for the winter. The two end windows have been discarded and new ones made.
There has been a change of plan for the frame. It is now proposed to use the pipe wagon KDB740481. The body has been removed and the frame will be shortened by 18 inches.
