By 1939 the LNER had raised the level of railway travel to new  standards of speed and comfort, only to be denied the fruits of its efforts by the outbreak of war. The books deals with the companies war time activities and the fight for adequate compensation with regard to the looming nationalisation. The decision to abandon steam in favour of diesel traction  is also included.

Condition: Very good.

This book is a magnificent album of the various preserved steam workings that have travelled the scenic lines of Scotland since the early 1970s. Coupled with these are some splendid shots of diesels, including Deltics and class 40s, at work and also a few nostalgic older pictures from the days when steam still ran under BR.
