this book the author traces the development of this
interesting family of locomotives, from the early
designs inherited fro the North Eastern, Great Central
and the Great Eastern Railways at the grouping, to the
popular and successful Thompson's B1s which saw most of
their service after Nationalisation. Illustrated with
more than 170 photographs, the majority of which have

| Just one month
after the end of regular BR Steam operation in 1968 the
first rescue from Woodham's scrapyard at Barry was
achieved when a Midland 0-6-0 left for the Keithley an
Worth Valley line. It was the beginning of what
has become probably become the greatest rescue of our
industrial heritage, for in the intervening years no
fewer than 160 locomotives have been brought back
from the brink of oblivion at Barry. |

Sir William Stanier, as CME of the LMS
for 11 years from 1932, was directly responsible for the
most profound turn around in steam locomotive
engineering on this, the largest railway in Britain. His
later Pacifics represented the ultimate development for
the heaviest express passenger work on the West
Coast main line. This book gives an in-depth
analysis of these locomotives.

Apart from serving the railway needs of
Shropshire and the bordering counties of Wales,
Shrewsbury was at the crossing point of two important
trunk lines - The Great Western Paddington to
Birkenhead route linking London with the Mersey, and the
North-to West line linking the industrial
Northwest of England with the collieries of South Wales
and, after completion of the Severn Tunnel, the
important port of Bristol and the holiday resorts of the
South West.
