The author has managed not only to compile an appealing text but also to join this with a wide variety of pictures covering the whole of the period  from 1840s to 1922

As a rail centre it was almost unique, with the daily arrival of locomotives from each of the 'Big Four' companies. This together with the many local branch lines and yards and the constant requirements for locomotive and crew changes, made Oxford a veritable  Mecca for the railway enthusiast.

Extensive references are made to notable locomotives built for overseas. the book includes a magnificent collection of illustrations, both in reproduction of photographs, and in many working drawings and diagrams.

From 1923 when 35 companies were merged to make the largest railway operating company in the world , until 1947,when it was nationalised, the much loved London, Midland and Scottish Railway, was carefully documented by photographers. The author has made an interesting selection from this store of photographs which shows the many facets of the companies operation.

Condition: Very Good, slight damage and internal repairs to dust jacket, book is sound.
