This route provided an
alternative access from the west of the county to
Norfolk’s main centre of population. It served an
extremely rural area via a series of surprisingly severe
gradients across countryside commonly perceived to be
flat. This book along with other publications completes
the detailed coverage of The M&GN in Norfolk.

The
narrative places the story of the line in an appropriate
historical context while, at the same time, providing
railway modellers and other enthusiasts with details of
locomotives, rolling stock, lineside features and
timetables. The Lynn & Hunstanton Railway should,
therefore, be of interest to both local historians and
railway specialists. This new edition has, in general,
followed the layout of the earlier version, with five
historical chapters, a chapter on ‘Miscellaneous
Details’, and a detailed route description. The
original text has been expanded in many places, notably
in Chapter Five, where many additional details relating
to the stations and infrastructure of the railway have
been included. Sheet map included.

The
subject of this book is the 43 miles of railway that
linked Norwich (Thorpe) to Wells-next-the-Sea on the
North Norfolk coast. The line was opened in stages and
had a number of distinct parts; Norwich to Wymondham
opened in 1845, and Wymondham to Dereham a year later.
Continuation to Fakenham came in 1849 and Wells was
reached in 1857. By 1862 the entire route was in the
hands of the newly-formed Great Eastern Railway. This
new edition of The Wells-next-the-Sea Branch contains
two new chapters dealing with the route of the line,
together with additional information on subjects such as
the LNER steam railcars and the role of the railway in
the two world wars. Sheet map included.

North
Norfolk Railway 2011 -
features six chapters filmed at the North Norfolk
Railway over the past 12 months.
Because of the loco’s significance to Norfolk’s
railway heritage, the long awaited ‘home-coming’
of Ivatt 4MT 43106 had to be the highlight of the
North Norfolk Railway’s 2011 calendar. Following a
lengthy and extensive overhaul, the Severn Valley
Railway-based loco visited the Poppy Line to take part
in this year’s Autumn Steam Gala. 43103 can be seen
in action over the line, together with many other
locomotive types on this 66 minute DVD.
Vintage
Revival 4 Minutes approximately
First we take a glimpse back to October 2010 when
visitors to the NNR/M&GN Society Members’ Day
were greeted with the surprise
appearance of three of the Society’s restored
vintage vehicles. The three-vehicle train formed up
behind Ring Haw consisted of the 1887 built
M&GN five-compartment coach No. 129, the Wisbech
and Upwell Tramcar No. 7, built by the GER at
Stratford in 1884, and 1881 BRCW built
M&GN Brake down train riding van No.12 - A
combined age incidentally of 371 years!
Spring
Gala 13 Minutes approximately
The first event of the 2011 calendar got
off to a flying start as six steam engines
were brought together for the March Gala
weekend. J15 65462,
Hunslet 16-inch Ring Haw, 56xx 5619, 57xx L99,
34xx 3717 City of Truro, 3F 47406 and J72
69023 Joem which looked absolutely stunning
paired with the Quad-Arts. |
Red
Pannier 3 Minutes approximately
On a glorious spring day, visiting London
Transport liveried Pannier tank L99 and its
rake of maroon coaches adds a blaze of colour
to the north Norfolk landscape. |
Diesel
Intermission 6 Minutes
approximately
A break in this predominately steam
programme as a selection of the line’s
diesel locomotives are featured. LEV1 (the
NRM's (Leyland Experimental Vehicle)) has
become very popular with visitors to the
railway and can be seen working alongside the
North Norfolk Railway’s German-built Railbus
E79960. Loco hauled trains are in the capable
hands of the Devon Diesel Society’s Class 37
6737. |
Summer
of Steam
41 Minutes approximately
A chapter brimming with memories of a
spectacular ‘Summer of Steam’. Sequences
from special events and mid-week running have
been edited together to create an exciting
look-back at some of the most memorable
moments. Featured in this chapter are: Ivatt
4MT 43106, 9F 92203 Black Prince,
Black Five 45305, 57xx L99, 56xx 5619, J15
65462 and J94 68030. |
Autumn
Farewell
6 Minutes approximately
Finally, on her last day in service
before overhaul, we enjoy the tireless
spectacle of J15 65462. The 1912
Stratford-built 0-6-0 is seen heading the
M&GN Society’s vintage stock during
Members’ Day on Saturday 1st October. Also,
Class 31 D5631 is seen in service sporting her
newly-applied
BR green livery. |

The B12s were
considered by many to be the finest inside
cylinder
express
locomotives to grace Britain’s railways,
the original complement of 80
engines are now no more – save one.
Published by the
Society, this booklet celebrates the class
and 61572
in
particular. The locomotive was brought out of
retirement in 1963
for a 260-odd
mile railtour. Chris Bird and David Butcher
describe the
events that led
up to the tour and the tour itself. Dick
Hardy precedes
this with an
affectionate look at the class in BR days
and some of the
men who
crewed the engines. isbn 978-0-904062-56-4 |

revisited his magazine articles for his
piece but it also includes new
material. David
Butcher’s article has been published
before but it is accompanied by
many
previously unpublished photographs and he
has added a newly written postscript.
Chris Bird
is a former chairman of the Society who was
intimately involved in the purchase
of the j15 and b12 and organised the
‘Wandering 1500’ railtour. His article
has been specially written.
