GER Passenger Train Cattle box built
1888 in 1908-1910 due to complaints from the farmers who wanted
a keeper to travel with the prize cattle, the GER built new
wagons and converted these to fish & fruit vans (ours was fruit)
withdrawn in 1928 and ended up at Kerdistone as part of the same
bungalow, that supplied the carriage now forming the "Homes from
railway carriages" exhibit at Holt education centre (Click Here).
The only items changed in the fruit van conversion was the
sliding feeding hatches 1ft square each side of the main doors
were blocked in (still visible inside but the exterior seems to
have had new boards fitted showing no trace) also the drop down
lower door was cut in half and bolted on to the two doors. As a
bungalow the side not shown in the photo was entirely removed
leaving three sides intact, and the wooden underframe.
